Spatial Patterns in Cancer Epidemiology

This special series on “Spatial Patterns in Cancer Epidemiology” is edited by Dr. Peter Baade, from Cancer Council Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, and Dr. Susanna Cramb, from Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.

A protocol for modelled evaluations to maximise the long-term health and economic gains of lung cancer interventions in Australia: The Lung cancer Evaluation And Policy program (LEAPp)

LEAPp is a unique, comprehensive approach to optimising the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of lung cancer control in Australia. The program is designed to meet evidence needs to guide policy and practice decision-making aimed at maximising the health gains of lung cancer interventions.

Facility type and cancer outcomes in the United States

Biological and non-biological factors contributing to cancer health disparities in U.S. minority populations. Biological and non-biological factors interact with each other in a way that can significantly impact health outcomes for patients. Non-biological factors (left) that contribute to cancer health disparities in U.S. minority populations include lower income and SES, facility type and volume, or a lack of health insurance or social support. Biological factors (right) include chronic infections, racial/ethnic ancestry, genomic alterations, and environmental exposures. Each of these variables affect health independently, but often occur together to increase negative outcomes. SES, socioeconomic status.

Facility type and volume impact outcomes in acute myeloid leukemia—a National Cancer Database Study

The purpose of our study using the National Cancer Database (NCDB) was to determine whether characteristics of the treating facility affect outcomes. Our primary objective was to assess how facility type and volume impact time to treatment (TTT). Secondary objectives examined the impact of these hospital characteristics on OS and receipt of chemotherapy, allogeneic HSCT and/or palliative care. We hypothesized that academic centers and high-volume facilities have shorter TTT, better OS, and higher utilization rates of induction chemotherapy, allogeneic HSCT, and palliative care.
